Harold Eugene (Gene) Harmon Jr. passed away surrounded by his loved ones on May 11, 2021. Gene was born on September 24, 1940 in Dallas, TX to Marjorie Houston Harmon and Harold Eugene Harmon. He graduated in 1958 from W. W. Samuel high school and soon after joined the Navy and submarine school in 1959.
Funeral Service: 11AM Friday, May 21, 2021 at JE Foust and Son Funeral Home, 523 S. Main St., Grapevine. Private Burial: DFW National Cemetery.
Gene served in active duty for 10 years and obtained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He retired Navy reserves in July 1991. During his Navy tenure, Gene was a submarine nuclear power engineer and served on conventional and nuclear-powered submarines: USS Tirante, USS Henry Clay (plank owner), USS Skipjack, and USS Chivo.
Gene married Barbara June Hill in 1960 and loved boating with his family and had many adventures on rivers, lakes, and the Gulf of Mexico. He also enjoyed supporting his sons in their athletic activities. Gene met his second wife, Ann, at WPS (Widow Persons Services) in Ft. Worth and were happily married for 27 years.
After leaving active service, Gene continued his long and successful career in power engineering. First at the National Bureau of Standards nuclear power plant, in MD, Northwestern Steel & Wire, in IL., City of Tallahassee St. Marks power plant in FL., and he completed his career at General Motors power plant in Arlington, TX until retiring in 1999.
Gene had a lifetime love of the Navy and his family enjoyed his countless stories of his exploits and many adventures. After he and his wife retired, they took many motorhome trips throughout the US as well as multiple international trips. They also enjoyed ballroom dancing with good friends. Gene returned to the thrill of youth with a new motorcycle when he turned 60. His favorite drives were through the Texas Hill country. Gene had several hobbies that he enjoyed at different times throughout his life. As a ham radio operator and being a member of the National Association for Amateur Radio; his ham radio call sign was KI5UQ; a model train enthusiast, and he also loved reading science fiction books and watching movies. As well, Gene was raised to Sublime Degree of a Master Mason and was a lifetime member of Mansfield lodge 331. His family will dearly miss the times where we all gathered together for family celebrations and holidays.
Gene is survived by his wife, Ann; son, Dustin Dwayne Harmon; son, Todd Eugene Harmon and wife Julayne Harmon; grandchildren, Josiah Harmon, Daniel Harmon; Alexa Harmon, Kylee Harmon, Brady Harmon and their mother, Michelle Lee Harmon; step-grandchildren, Robert Hayes, Allison Lansdowne, Diana Doty, and Erica Doty; step-children, Mark Doty and wife Brenda Doty, Linda Hayes and husband John Hayes, Karen Doty and Gene's faithful Chihuahua,Toby.
