GRAPEVINE -- Donald Ray "Don" Smith, 79, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at the J.E. Foust & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation: 9:30 a.m. until service time. Don was born Feb. 7, 1935, in Hawkins to Claude and Lorene Smith. He graduated from Lewisville High School in 1953 and excelled in football, basketball and track. After high school, Don attended North Texas State College on a football scholarship and graduated in 1958 with a bachelor of business administration degree. Don received a master of arts in criminology and corrections from Sam Houston State University in 1969. After graduating from North Texas, Don worked for Sanger-Harris Department stores as a department manager. In 1965, he joined the Dallas County Juvenile Department as a probation officer. In 1971, Don went to work for the North Central Texas Council of Governments and after six years of service, he returned to the Dallas County Juvenile Department as director of Juvenile Services and chief probation officer. In September of 1978, Don became the director of Adult Probation in Tarrant County. He retired after 23 years of service to the department. Don married the love of his life, Wanda Tillery, in 1957. He enjoyed going to his son's sporting events throughout the years and spending time with his family. He had several memorable trips to Las Vegas with his parents and his brothers, James and C. Dan Smith. Don enjoyed playing golf and travelling to Colorado and Hawaii. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Grapevine. Don was preceded in death by his loving parents, Claude and Lorene Smith. Survivors: His wife, Wanda; sons, David Smith and wife, Jeanna, Brian Smith and wife, Carol; grandchildren, Shawn Harwell, Ashley Rowan, Travis Smith, Presley Smith and Devin Isham; great-grandchildren, Charlie, Grace and Owen Harwell, Alyssa Rowan, Makayla and Reece Isham; brothers, James Smith and Lanell of Sunnyvale, Calif., and C. Dan Smith and wife, LeNore, of Plano; and numerous nieces and nephews.
