Jesse MacKay Wells

Jesse MacKay Wells, beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the age of 74. He entered eternal rest in the home he built for his family, following a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

Jesse was born January 3, 1950 to Lynn and Maxine Wells. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lynn Warren Wells; and son-in-law, Brandon White.

Jesse’s life was marked by love, laughter, and a spirit of curiosity. He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Lynn (Hawkins) Wells; and their four children Elizabeth (Stephen) Levesque, Adam (Dacey) Wells, Daniel (Danielle) Wells, and Johanna Wells (Chris Hamm). He also leaves behind five lively grandchildren Ginny Wells, Tyler Levesque, Harrison Wells, Samuel Wells, and Elenore Wells.

Jesse’s journey with Lynn began when they met at Grand Valley State College in Allendale, MI, where he was studying behavioral science, geology, and sociology. Jesse was 20, and Lynn was a mere six months younger. He had a lifelong fascination with pre-modern artifacts, particularly handmade tools and weaponry, and was a natural tinkerer and builder. A self-taught blacksmith, Jesse crafted his own tools and gadgets, including farming equipment, chain link clothing, and decorative ironwork.

In 1971, Jesse and Lynn married and started their family on the Wells Polled Hereford farm. Jesse spent many summers working the fields, maintaining the farm equipment, and caring for the cattle. He worked for Grandville Public Schools, starting as a custodian and eventually retiring as a heating engineer. He forged many lifelong friendships throughout his time with the school district.

Jesse had a love for adventure and the outdoors. He enjoyed exploring the family grounds, hunting, sailing the Grand River, and spending time with family at their pool. He also cherished camping and hunting trips with loved ones, as well as evenings of playing Pedro, shooting pool, and throwing darts.

Known for his quirky sense of humor and deep knowledge of steam engines, Jesse was a lifelong fan of Bob Dylan and had a talent for fixing nearly anything—whether it was building steam whistles, repairing tractors, or restoring old cars. His love for life was evident in everything he did.

A celebration of life will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, November 23, 2024 at West Leonard Facility, 1140 Muskegon Ave. NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory.
