Jim grew up and resided in West Michigan for 77 years. He lived a hero's life with a successful athletic career during his younger years. He was a devoted family man and had a long, proud career as a teacher, coach, and mentor to thousands of students and athletes at Kenowa Hills High School. Jim loved to spend time with his closest circle of friends talking about family, sports, politics, memories, and the crazy ways of this world. Jim loved to travel the world, spend time at Lake Michigan, and take drives on the backroads; he also loved motorsports, hockey, and all sporting activities. He enjoyed nature, cars, his many dogs over the years, and collecting sports memorabilia. Jim took extreme pride in his family and enjoyed all of the educational, social, and sporting activities and events that came along with it.
Jim is now reunited with his parents Francis and Dorothy and brothers Lee and Richard who preceded him in death. Surviving James is Rosemary, his beloved wife of 54 years; son and daughter-in-law James II and Jennifer; daughter, Angela; and grandkids Drew, Morgan, Shelby, Samantha, and James.
James DeRidder, also known as Jim, Dad, Papa, Uncle, Coach, Teacher “DeRidder,” Big Jim, Zeb, Jumbo, Friend, and Alpine Estates Monster, will be remembered as a great man who would selflessly help anyone in his inner circle without hesitation. Jim had a great sense of humor and endlessly joked with and teased those whom he loved. James will always be loved and respected by those who were lucky enough to know him and gain his trust. We love you Papa!
A celebration of life for James will be held from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Gracewil Country Club, 2597 4 Mile Rd. NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49544. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresgrandville.com in their guest book online.
