Hi Donna and family,
I just learned of Doug's passing after feeling an urge to see how you all were doing on May 16th.  

Doug and I met our first day checking into basic training at Great Lakes in July 1955.   We felt the stress of being away from home, and made a gentleman's agreement to watch out for each other's back.   After boot camp we would exchange letters every week or two until I got out the navy before he did to check into the NROTC program at the University of Wisconsin.   Doug enjoyed writing to tell me that, even when he was out to sea and the mail was not delivered every day, he wrote you every day and was thrilled that you wrote likewise, and some days he would get a whole bundle of mail from you.

In about 1959 I think you and Doug were living in an East Lansing trailer house and the UW pistol team arrived at MSU for a meet, checked into a motel and I called to see if I could meet you and visit while at MSU.   Doug said, "Hey, you are only a few hundred feet from our house trailer.   We are at the trailer park on the other side of the fence behind the motel that you are at.

The next time my family got to visit your family that I can remember was in the 1970s.   Your family lived on a nice farmette north of Grand Rapids and just off the main highway.
Doug and I had some visits via phone for years after that but gradually as our families got bigger, we did not keep up with what God was doing to bless our families.

Tonight I am about to go watch one of my great grandsons, Elijah, play little league, and have 7 great grandchildren, 13 grandchildren, 4 children still living, and many spouses-in-law, cousins etc. and the blessing of a prayer warrior bride who has a group of ladies gather at our home every Tuesday.

After a career of designing medical life-support products, in 1985, the Lord called me to change careers and go to Bethel Seminary in St. Paul MN.  The Lord has challenged Ellie and me to reach out with truth to people where God's enemies have deceived so many humans.

It has been 40 years since we moved to Vermont and didn't have much chance to get back to see family. That said, Kathy and I have warm memories of family reunions that were usually held at some Hansen home in the Grand Rapids area. We remember Doug's great sense of humor and generous Christian spirit. We remember especially a touch football game that broke out in 1970 that pitted the Hansen boys against my fiancé at the time and wife of 46 years and me. We draw comfort from knowing that Doug's faith in Jesus has led him to the Savior's presence forever. Our prayers are with Donna and all the family as you mourn your loss. Doug was one of the teachers at CPHS, that was always there when you needed him. I enjoyed having him for a teacher. I took 2 years of wood shop with him, and proudly still own the desk he guided me, in making. I always enjoyed talking to him in class and in the hallways. 37 years later, you still we're one of the best. Thank you!! RIP Dave Nash Class of 1980

Sad to hear of Doug's passing. He always had a smile and friendly greeting for me at church. Praying for his family - especially Donna. May you feel God's peace and comfort.

I will always remember Mr. Hansen as the "popcorn man" from Poineer park. Though I am aware that he was many thing and so much more than the provider of a special treat while camping, that memory remains close to my heart. I know growing up and spending that week at Poineer Park every year was special, so many from his generations are close to my heart because I got to know them from coming down to get popcorn from Mr. H. Thank you for being faithful to the end and being an example of God's heart to the young people while we were finding our way (and still are, the journey never stops on this Earth!).Much love and prayers to Mrs. Hansen and all your friends and family. -Brittany Wasnich (DeBoer)

As a graduate of Comstock Park 1977, Mr Hansen was our wood shop teacher. Always had a smile and a great deal of understanding for us girls in the class. After high school I worked at the Kmart on Alpine and I would see Mr Hansen come into the store on occasion. I remember when they held the Pepsi challenge in the store and he came in. He sat down at the table to take the challenge, looked at me and winked and whispered he could tell the difference between the Coke and Pepsi. When they asked him which one he liked better, he pointed at the Pepsi and smiled. He was a such a hoot. He will be missed.

I have so many memories of Mr. Hansen. Our dinners out in Florida. Him and my Grandpa DeBlaay garage saling and coming home with some questionable finds! Haha! The way he would give my Grandma to deblaay a hard time..and she would secretly love it! Hearing about all the trips and memories made with my grandma and grandpa DeBlaay...Out West, Alaska, etc. But perhaps the most prominent memory was him witnessing to just about everyone he met. He was so passionate about sharing his faith and that always stood out to me. Mr. Hansen treated me like an adopted granddaughter. I know he is having the best time in heaven right now and I can't help but think of my grandpa DeBlaay greeting him when he got there. What a reunion that must have been!
