Nancy Van Voorst, age 75, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 18, 2023. She was born August 2, 1948 in Petoskey, Michigan to Robert and Dorothy Tainter. Nancy graduated from Boyne City High School and studied at Grace Bible College and Davenport University in Grand Rapids. Her husband of 51 years, Franklin, passed away in April 2020.
Nancy enjoyed working at D&M Metal Products in accounting until her retirement. She loved to travel, especially on sister trips, and on a cherished trip to Bolivia with Compassion International where she was able to meet and spend time with one of the children and his family she had sponsored for many years. Nancy loved to cross-country ski and could be found skiing at local parks and trails with any significant amount of snowfall. She was an avid reader and photographer, enjoyed camping, walking with neighborhood friends, biking, family Scrabble games and watching Jeopardy. She was a life-long Detroit Tigers fan and enjoyed playing softball. She volunteered in her church nursery, Sunday school classes and church library for many years. She loved being “Nana” to her four grandchildren.
She is remembered by her children Sheila (Doug) Sweeting, Aaron (Tamara) VanVoorst, and Micah (Chelsea Hirdning) Van Voorst and grandchildren James, Samantha, Alex, Jack; sisters Joan (Keith) Wieck and Shirley (Tim) Baldridge, brothers Richard Tainter, twin brother Gordon (Judy Melton) Tainter, and Tom (Elaine) Tainter, and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate Nancy’s life will be held Thursday, August 24 at Reyers North Chapel, 2815 Fuller Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505 at 11:00 am, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The family wants to express its deepest appreciation to Faith Hospice and Resthaven Homes for their tender and loving care of Nancy. Contributions in memory of her life may be made to Faith Hospice or Compassion International.
