I just found out about Julie's passing today. I stumbled upon this by visiting Mike's obituary page. My ex and I were the across the street neighbors of Mike and Julie on W. Chestnut cir. in Colorado. One of my fondest memories of Julie is that one year her parents were visiting around Christmas time. When it came time for them to leave their car wouldn't start and was stuck in the driveway. Being a Mechanic by trade I diagnosed the problem and got them on their way. Afterwards I was invited inside for some hot chocolate and conversation. The enjoyment and company that I experienced that day will be with me forever.

 My heart is heavy with the thought of what Andie, Alex and Casey are going through. My prayers are with you always.

My deepest sympathy for the Haugen and Kitzrow Families, Julie and Mike were good friends of mine and I think about and pray for them everyday. They both are sorely missed.

I am so sorry about your sudden loss of Julie - my heart goes out to each of you and especially  her children in this difficult time.

On Saturday, Casey's Odyssey of the Mind team received an OMer award.  An OMer award is given to an individual or team that demonstrates exceptional spirit.  I know Julie would have been so proud of the team.  The team (Casey Haugen, Alex Herold, Kendra Herold, Riley Moore, Madison Mahacek, Hope Swanson and Courtney Larson) worked so hard to present their solution and achieved third place at the state competition.  The OMer nomination is written below:


"This amazing group of 5th and 6th graders has faced more adversity than any team deserves, but each time they have pulled together as a force to be reckoned with, supported one another, and risen to the top.  This team has stuck together for years and repeatedly demonstrated their strength of character.  That they are here today is testimony to that strength.  One week ago, a team member's mother - who is one of the team's coaches - passed away unexpectedly.  The team rallied and supported one another with incredible sensitivity and maturity beyond their years.  Odyssey of the Mind has been a huge part of this family's life, and has proved to be a helpful and healing factor in the life of this team.  They chose to be here and perform today in honor of their coach, because they know that's what she would have wanted.  Knapp Forest Unhinged Structure, we salute you!"

After the memorial service, we went to my son Matt's baseball practice at the NELL fields. Matt played with Alex three years ago. I remember Alex pitching, Mike coaching 3rd base and Julie watching the game with her State blanket nearby.That is how I will always remember Mike and Julie, happy and involved in their children's lives. May you rest in peace Julie, you will be greatly missed.
