Sonya Lea Grundy, of Grand Prairie, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Medical Center of Arlington, her son and daughter at her side. Sonya was born in Sulphur, OK, November 15, 1957 to Everett and Lauretta Sharp, graduated from South Grand Prairie High School in 1976, keeping in contact with many classmates via Facebook. In1982 she was blessed with her daughter, Crystal, and quickly adapted to being a young mom. In 1990, her son Mathew came along to complete her brood. She was a dedicated mom to her kids, instilling a hard-working mentality in both of them. She was one to always model what she taught. Heart to heart talkswith her children while laying in her bed or swinging on the back porch. In 2012, Sonya gained the role of Nana, a role that suited her more than anything she had ever done prior to that. Her grandson Colton quickly became the bulk of what she talked about and flooded her facebook with photos and videos. In 2014 her “mini me”(as she called her) Cadyn came along. She was the perfect example of how the best moms get promoted to Nana. Sonya was a long-time employee of Grand Prairie ISD, where she worked managing the cafeteria for several schools throughout her career. Her last 8 years were spent at Moore Elementary School. She loved visiting each day with the young students in her school, and cared deeply for them. Faculty and Staff raved over her Thursday “Teacher Lunch” and always knew she would take care of them. She enjoyed working with several of her very best friends. They made the work days pass with practical jokes on each other and planning their next trip to Winstar. Before working for GPISD, Sonya ran D & D Bait and Tackle where she was known as “Sassy Sonya”. She spent many hours listening to fish tales and sharing the locations of the most current “honey hole” to catch the one that got away. She was crafty, enjoyed wood working and painting as a creative outlet. She was actively involved with her children and grandchildren, doing yard work, playing in the sun and water. Sonya was a hardworking, straightforward, and tenacious woman. Those who knew her would be the first to say that she was the kind of person you would want to have in your corner. She is survived by her daughter Crystal and husband Chris Garrett of Grand Prairie; grandchildren Colton Michael and Cadyn Lea; son Mathew Grundy of Grand Prairie; sister Laura Sharp Poindexter of Arlington; and so many cousins and close friends.Sonya is preceded in death by her parents, Everett Sharp and Lauretta Steward and several aunts and uncles.
