Dr. J. R. (Roline) Chaney was born January 1, 1934, to Louis Jackson and Clara of Hico, Texas. He died on May 13th, 2023, in Tyler, Texas. He graduated from Hico High School in 1951. He received a diploma from Tarleton State Junior College in 1953, where he met Mildred Hale. He graduated from Baylor University as a Ministry Major in 1955. He and Mildred were married in 1956. She was his one love for life and partner in ministry. Mildred preceded him in death June 22, 2021.
They had three children, Glenda Stephenson (Randy), Karen Ritcheson (Scott), and Tim Chaney. He is survived by six grandchildren, Josh Collier (Bridget), Doug Ritcheson (Katie), Jonathan Collier (Angela), Dane Ritcheson (Mindi), David Ritcheson (Kayla), and Audrey Ebers (Aaron); four step-grandchildren, Becky King (Jimmy), Toni Dalton (Robert), Heather Brewer (Joshua), Mindi Negus (Jason); thirteen great-grandchildren, Quentin, Gwendolyn, Lilly, Sadie, Renly, Elliot, Neil, Jack, Macy, Chaney Jo, Kenneth, Wesley, and Calvin; 18 step-great-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Patsy Moore; and niece, Debra Dyer.
Dr. Chaney served as pastor of the following churches: Clairette Baptist of Hico, First Baptist of Gordon, South Beckley Baptist of Dallas, Spring Valley Baptist of Dallas, and Inglewood Baptist of Grand Prairie. In retirement, he served in interim ministry at several churches and continued to preach when asked.
He earned a bachelor of arts degree at Baylor University. He earned a Bachelor of Divinity, Master of Religious Education, and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary of Fort Worth.
He was active in various ministries including: President of the Dallas Pastors Conference, Moderator for the Dallas Baptist Association, and member of the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. During his ministry of over 65 years, he preached the gospel of Jesus Christ in eight different states and seven foreign countries.
Funeral service: 2 p.m., Saturday May 20, 2023 at First Baptist Church Grand Prairie, 950 Mayfield Road, Grand Prairie, Texas 75052. Visitation: Will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., prior to the funeral service. Interment to follow in Hico Cemetery, Hico, Texas at 4:45PM.
