Durwood was born in Bogota, Texas on January 28, 1937. Durwood graduated from Bogota High School and served in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1962. He then graduated from the University of North Texas.
He was married to Peggy Cheatham on September 15, 1962, and after working as a teacher in the Grand Prairie Independent School District for several years, he went to work for LTV (later Vought Aircraft) in Grand Prairie, where he worked as a simulator engineer until 1999.
Durwood was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Grand Prairie, where he regularly ushered on Sunday mornings.
He coached the Grand Prairie Tornado boy’s youth soccer team for six years and would become a lifelong friend to many of his players after he stopped coaching.
He was a kind and sensitive man who held a special place in his heart for his family and would get sentimental whenever he spoke with pride about his son. He always put his family first and made sure that Peggy had the best care possible when she was stricken with cancer.
Durwood was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, and is survived by his son, Matt, daughter-in-law, Renae, grandchildren, Brendan and Kayleigh, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jane and Buddy Berry, niece, Michelle, and nephew, Chris.
