Maureen Adell Mahaffey Frederick passed away July 15, 2024, at the age of eighty-two. A lifetime native of Grand Junction, Maureen was born to Vera McDonald Mahaffey and Dean Mahaffey on November 21, 1941. She spent her childhood with siblings Margaret and Merrill and was a talented acrobat. She pursued education as a proud graduate of Grand Jct. High School Class of 1959. She graduated from CSU in 1963, with a degree in Botany, as a member of the Delta Zeta sorority. She notably served as Dr. Harrington’s assistant researching and identifying plants and he acknowledged her in his book- which was required reading for over 40 years at CSU.
She married John Frederick in 1962 and they settled in Grand Junction after his military service, raising four daughters. Maureen was an avid reader, enthusiastic about travel (becoming a travel agent later in life), and a devoted grandmother to her twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. She created a gathering place for all, delighting in hosting family and friends at her home and cabin. She became a second mother to her nephews and her daughters’ friends. She continued this legacy with her grandchildren and their friends, treating poor college students to meals at home and the Blue Moon. Maureen’s passion for botany matured as she became a Master Gardener, volunteered for plant identification at Mesa College, and always surrounded herself with flowers. She leaves a legacy of the love of travel, having planned multiple international trips with her family. Over the years there were a host of cats, dogs, and horses that were part of her family.
Maureen is pre-deceased by her husband, John Frederick, and her beloved parents Vera and Dean Mahaffey. She is survived by her siblings Margaret Mahaffey Beckner (Orrin) and Merrill Mahaffey (Jeanne), her four daughters: Nancy Bell (Scott), Diane Shay (Lyle), Deana Weber (Doug), and Karen Gallegos (Charles), her twelve grandchildren: Nico, Lauren, Conor, Haley (Travis), Emilyn, Madison (Jack), Lindsay, Maisyn, Faith, Brianna, Colton and Caleb, and one great-grandchild (Brooklyn) with two more on the way. She will be greatly missed by many.
Services are planned for 10am on Monday, July 22nd, at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Grand Junction Botanical Garden, the Humane Society, or Colorado National Monument Association.
