Martha was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Knox Young II & Carolyn Smith Young on May 10, 1947. Martha had an active childhood in Pittsburgh enjoying competitive swimming and playing 36 holes of golf each day with the boys at Shannopin Country Club. Martha was active in high school and graduated from Avonworth High School, Home of the Antelopes. She attended Kent State University in Ohio.
Marty moved to Colorado in 1969 and worked at IBM where she met her future husband, Larry Jones. They were married on May 9, 1970, in the chapel at Denver University and have had 51 wonderful years together. While Larry was an IBM sales rep, they moved to Grand Junction in 1974. Marty was a great mother for their two sons, Carter Knox, and Bradley William. She served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, and Team Mom for their soccer and Buddy Werner Ski Racing teams. Every summer, Marty would take a van full of boys, Jess Wesley, Kyle Bemis, Todd Simpson, the Troyer and Aubert brothers and Carter and Brad to the front range to compete in Colorado Junior Golf Association tournaments. She put up with stinky socks, shared bathrooms, for up to two weeks at a time, but the result was that all of the boys had success in those junior golf tournaments as well as high school golf, college golf and beyond. Marty served on the Grounds Committee at the Bookcliff Country Club as well as the BCC Board of Directors. Marty was an outstanding golfer and was a four-time State Champion for the Colorado Golf Association, Parent/Child Tournament, winning two championships with each of her two sons, Carter, and Brad. Marty was the Bookcliff CC Ladies Club Champion 17 times, which matched her father’s (Knox Young) record at Shannopin CC in Pittsburgh, PA. She never wanted to break his record but she just wanted to tie it! Marty was the Grand Junction High School Girls Golf Team Coach. She was able to help two of her best players, Jolene Fellhauer and Ashley Ford, get golf scholarships to the University of Colorado. Because of her accomplishments on the golf course the BCC Ladies Club Golf Championship has been renamed The Marty Jones LGA Club Championship.
Marty was a voracious reader and was a member of unique book club with 11 other ladies who enjoyed golf trips, lunches out and NO book reviews. Besides golf, Marty was an excellent skier, fly fisher, trap shooter and swimmer. Marty was even a great sports bar shuffleboard player beating all 15 of the J. Gatsby boys. She especially enjoyed golf trips with her husband, Larry. She had several hole-in-ones, including one at Bandon Dunes, her favorite course in North America.
The tuning and repair shop in the Brown Family CMU Golf Performance Center at Lincoln Park is named Marty’s Shop in her honor.
Martha is survived by her husband, Larry, her two sons, Carter, and Brad and two grandsons, Bodhi, and Knox. In addition, she is survived by her sister Linda Ferguson (Nelson), brothers Knox Young (Paula), and Kent Young (Mary), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to the excellent care provided at Larchwood by Lindsey, JoAnn, Latisha, Linda, and Ernie.
Services will be held at the Canyon View Vineyard Chapel on Thursday March 10th at 2:00 PM, followed a Celebration of Life at Bookcliff Country Club. Per Marty’s wishes, there will be a golf tournament in Marty’s honor (Date TBD - gross scores only!). Charitable donations can be made in Marty’s name to the Colorado Mesa University Foundation, FBO CMU Ladies & Men’s Golf Teams, 1450 North 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO 81501.
