Jim Abshire (68) of Paonia, Colorado, passed away unexpectedly at his home on September 22, 2024. Born on December 19, 1955, in Cortez, Colorado, Jim was the cherished son of James “Bus” Wesley Abshire and Ruth Justine Bowie.
Jim spent his younger years in Grand Junction, where he attended Central High School, graduating in 1974. His childhood was marked by a close and enduring bond with his brother, Brian Abshire.
Following his high school years, Jim pursued a degree in Mining Engineering with a focus on coal from the esteemed Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. In addition to his academic achievements, he was a talented athlete, playing football during his college years. Jim's career as a Senior Mine Engineer was distinguished and far-reaching, taking him to various locations across Colorado and Utah, including Glenwood Springs, Paonia, Yampa, and Salina.
On June 1, 1979, Jim married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Barb Massey. Together, they built a life filled with love, adventure, and lasting memories. Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandpa, always placing his family at the center of his world.
Jim's life was enriched by the friendships he formed through his work in coal mining and his years of coaching youth baseball and football. His love for sports was evident in the countless hours he spent at ball fields, in the gym, and at snowmobile races.
Jim was an adventurous spirit and a man of many talents, who found joy in outdoor activities like riding his RZR, snowmobiling, and golfing. His passion for learning fueled his insatiable curiosity, leading him to constantly expand his knowledge through various pursuits. Known as a "Master of All Trades," Jim took great pride in successfully completing projects both big and small. His fearless approach to life, deep love for his family, and unending thirst for knowledge will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Jim's presence will be deeply missed, especially by his wife, children, grandchildren, and his brother, Brian Abshire.
A special place in Jim's heart was reserved for the Massey cabin on the Uncompahgre. This cabin was not just a retreat but a labor of love where Jim spent countless hours building, maintaining, and creating cherished memories with Barb, his in-laws, nieces, nephews, children, and grandchildren. His love for the outdoors and his skillful hands were evident in every project he undertook there.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Barb, and their three children: Eben Abshire and his wife Amy, along with their children Westley, 12, and Hadley, 10; Ivy Coryell and her husband Andy, with their children Graysie, 12, Hannah, 11, and Casey, 9; and Tyree Abshire and his Fiancé Stephanye. Jim took immense pride in watching his children and grandchildren grow, always offering his unwavering support and encouragement in their pursuits. Additionally, Jim is survived by his devoted brother Brian Abshire & wife Kathy, cousins Danny, Tom, Susan & Don “Sandy” Stokes, Billy, Kit & Bruce Bowie and Janyne Ruth Souza.
A memorial service to celebrate Jim's life will be held on September 30, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Martin's Mortuary in Grand Junction, Colorado.
