Doris Ruth Gore McFry was born July 28, 1934 to Glen Edward Gore and Laura Rebecca Brown Gore at Mrs. Combs Maternity Home in Grand Junction, Colorado. Her and her twin brother, Donald, were taken home to the log cabin on Glade Park where the family lived for the next fourteen years. Her mother didn’t know she was expecting twins and they were born on her birthday.
Her father was a sheep rancher and her mother was a school teacher on Glade Park. She attended the Pipeline school through the eighth grade. In 1948, the family moved to the Redlands so the children could attend high school. She graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1952. Doris enjoyed ranching with her family. After that, she met and married her first husband Milton Cass in 1954, and they later divorced in 1979. Together they have one son, Lyndon (Lynn) Cass. They lived in various towns across the state, including Vail, Aspen, and Creed. She loved snowmobiling, skiing, riding tote gotes, dirt-biking, and winning trophies racing in the Powderpuff class.
Doris later remarried to the love of her life, Earl Monte McFry, on January 30, 1982 in Las Vegas. They spent over thirty five years together in their Grand Junction home, during which they enjoyed going on cruises, traveling the United States in their RV, camping, hunting, fishing, and four-wheeling. Doris and Earl were avid rock hounds, and were members of their local Gem and Mineral Club. They were also members of the local Motor Home Club and weekly breakfast club. She adored flowers and spent much of her free time tending her home gardens.
If you had ever met Doris, it is likely that you remember her as a sweet, caring woman, who treasured her family and many friends. She never had anything negative to say, and was always willing to lend a hand. After the death of her husband in 2018, Doris spent her final years with her son Lynn and his wife Isabel in New Castle, Colorado, where she passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of January 4, 2022. She is survived by her son Lynn Cass, stepdaughters Janet McFry and Dianna Fox, and grandchildren Adrian, Alejandro, and Jasmine Cass, and Ian and Ty Gardner. She is preceded in death by her husband Earl McFry and her siblings, Marilyn Jean Burchett, Mary Louise Workman, and Donald Glen Gore.
Due to Covid, a family and friend visitation for Doris will be held in lieu of a funeral at 2 PM Friday January 7, 2022, at Martin Mortuary. Masks are encouraged. She will be placed in the mausoleum alongside her husband at Grand Junction Memorial Gardens on Monday January 10, 2022. In memory of Doris McFry, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
