In his early years, Dick learned the game of golf at Mott Park where he would wade the Flint River for golf balls. He played basketball and participated in marching band at Flint Southwestern, developing his skill as an outstanding trumpet player. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, frequently taking trips to Canada and northern Michigan with his father and brother Dale.
Having developed his game in high school, Flint JC and Michigan State, Dick became well-known in the local golf community for his long resume of tournament wins at the local, regional and state level, even having qualified for the Buick Open as a teenager. More importantly, his legacy will live on from his tireless efforts in support of Flint Junior Golf, establishing a local AJGA tour event, helping secure funding to launch the Buick Goodwrench Open, and cementing the Genesee All-Star Classic as a premier county-wide golf event.
Dick started his professional career as a teacher and later became a self-made businessman, having played a key marketing role at Sybra to help launch Arby’s franchises across the country before starting his own company, Marr Marketing Consultants. Upon retirement he continued to work as a substitute teacher throughout the Flint area, and sold handmade golf clubs under the brand “Marrmade”.
Dick is survived by his wife J-Ann, Daughters Lory and Kirsten, and son Richie.
