Shirley Mary Murray passed on June 12, 2020 after a long and joyful life. She was born to Patrick Leo and Hilda Flynn on May 22, 1931 in Pittsburgh, PA and grew up in Cresson, Pa with two sisters Claire (Flynn) Matlin and Reba (Flynn) McDermit. After finishing High School in Cresson, Pa, Shirley Joined the U.S. Navy after going through basic training then stationed in San Diego, Ca. Once in California she was reintroduced to a United States Marine, Samuel C. Murray who was also from Cresson, Pa. After dating in California Samuel and Shirley made the commitment to marry and start a family. In California the Murray’s had a son, Steven Patrick Murray. Samuel and Shirley then started out to travel the country as part of the United States Marines. Samuel’s first deployment after marriage was to Japan for a year. Upon his return the family moved to Camp Lejeune, NC where another Murray was born, George Edward Murray. After being stationed in NC, the family was moved to Altoona, Pa to continue serving as a Marine where another son was born, James William Murray. United States Marines continued to transfer the Murrays to Albany, Ga and then to Arlington, Va. Where the fourth son of the Murray family was brought into the world, Thomas Charles Murray was born. In 1965 before heading to North Korea, Gunnery Sergeant Samuel C. Murray moved their family to Orlando, Florida. This was so Shirley and the boys could be near her Parents, Patrick and Hilda Flynn. A year later Master Sergeant Samuel C. Murray retuned from overseas deployment and re-stationed to Albany, Ga, then Camp Lejeune, NC before retiring in 1968, returning to Orlando, Florida where the family would call home.
In Orlando Shirley would continue to be a stay at home Mother to four boys through their High School years and beyond. Unfortunately Samuel passed away due to illness in 1988 leaving Shirley in total control of the Family.
Around 1989 Shirley started to volunteer for St. John Vianney Catholic Church as a receptionist while still being a big part of the Murray Boys and their Families. She continued to serve the church for about 12 years while enjoying life and traveling the world. Around 2005 Shirley made the decision to sell the Murray Estate and move to downtown Orlando. After a couple of years she moved into Lutheran Towers and continued to enjoy her Catholic religion, while enjoying life playing cards and Bingo with several great friends.
After enduring the solitary confinement for the covid-19 virus environment Shirley fell breaking her arm which caused her to be hospitalized. Her sons decided to bring Shirley home to spend time with the family who would provide her with the best medical care. Shirley’s last week at home she was surrounded by her loving family where she enjoyed great meals and playing lots of cards.
Shirley is survived by her sister Reba McDermit, Cousin Eileen Mercer, her 4 boys Steve (Janet), George (Patty), Jim (Cheryl), Tom and their families 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren
