Mike was born on March 19, 1948, in Mt. Vernon, NY, to proud parents, Joseph, an accountant and Flora, a homemaker. He grew up in the Bronx in a one bedroom apartment on Carpenter Avenue, and enjoyed playing stickball on the street with his friends. An active member of the Catholic church, he served as altar boy, while also becoming a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout.
Shortly after entering St. John’s University in 1965, Mike found employment at a gas station on the Deegan Expressway in New York. While attending school, he saved up enough money to buy a 1967 Chevelle SS, a car that he would cherish throughout his life. One of his favorite early memories of the car was giving a lift to actor Paul Newman and his son after the famous star had a breakdown at his station. We’re not sure if Mr. Newman remembered the trip, but it remained one of Mike’s fondest memories. He also enjoyed taking his Chevelle to chase some speed at a ¼ mile Drag strip on Long Island.
Mike graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from St. John’s University in 1969, and one year later, on a Thanksgiving night, he met the love of his life, Candida Marques on a chance visit with friends to the Post House on Long Island. Mike and Candy were married on May 27, 1972, and shortly thereafter, the two were blessed with sons, Paul, born in 1975, and Jason, born in 1976. A dad who loved spending time with family, Mike and family enjoyed trips to the Milleridge Inn, The Bronx Zoo, feeding the ducks in Roslyn Park, substitute coaching his son’s soccer team and teaching his boys to be strong problem solvers.
He spent much of his career as a financial analyst and planner at IBM, working in their New York City, White Plains, NY and Tokyo, Japan offices. While overseas, Mike and family had many adventures, traveling across the world and visiting amazing countries on almost every continent. He took great pride in preparing their itineraries, being early to the airport before every trip, and documenting their journeys through his love of photography. An avid fan of the vacation slide-show, Mike created literally tens of thousands of photos and memories that he left behind for his family.
He and Candy retired to Orlando, Florida in 2000. After completing a major rebuild of his beloved Chevelle, he was an active managing member of the Muscle Car Network of Central Florida and participant in area car shows. Mike and Candy enjoyed trips to Disney, Disney cruises and day trips in and around Central Florida. Becoming a grandfather in 2004, he was fondly named Pop-Pop by his five grandchildren, and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with them fishing, going on cruises, visiting the zoo, or working on his car.
Mike was known as a kind and loving father and grandfather, a good and loyal friend and the proudest owner of his blue 1967 Chevelle SS.
He is survived by his adoring wife Candy, eldest son Paul, daughter in law Alta and their children Joey and Isabella, his younger son Jason and daughter in law Melissa, and their children Ethan, Gavin, and Tristan.
