Ernie Edwin Moris Goodwin of Altamonte Springs, Florida passed away on September 20, 2023, just after his 89th birthday. He was born on September 17, 1934 in Nashville, Tennessee to the late Charles and Lena May Goodwin.
Ernie served his nation in the United States Navy Submarine Force during the Vietnam and Cold Wars as a Torpedoman’s Mate First Class from 1955 to 1977. He qualified in Submarines aboard USS Tunny (SS/SSG/APSS/LPSS-282) and further served in USS Bowfin (SS-287), USS Picuda (SS-382), and USS Lapon (SSN- 661). Ernie retired as a Recruit Company Commander at the Naval Training Center Orlando.
Ernie was a lifetime member of the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. where he served as the inaugural Secretary of the Central Florida Base. He was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8093 DeBary, Florida.
In his free time, Ernie enjoyed being on his boat, fishing, golfing, camping, blue grass festivals, and drinking a cold beer.
We love and miss him dearly.
Ernie was preceded in death by Billie Goodwin, his first wife; his daughter, Judy Ponec; son, Jeff Jackson; granddaughter, Heather Jackson; his wife, Marilyn Goodwin; and his stepson, Glen (Buddy) Bernhard.
He is survived by his children, Janice Jackson, Jerry Jackson (Tina), John Jackson (Mary), Lori Little (Bill), Yvonne Metheny; grandchildren, Jennifer, Joey, Kari, Travis, Monica, Mollie, Morgan, Shayne, Nash, Valerie; and twelve beloved great grandchildren.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Carolyn (Terrie) Bleashka for going above and beyond to make sure that Ernie was well cared for, that family and friends were informed, and being a such a comfort and a friend to him. She is truly a blessing.
Please join as at 10am on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Gotha, Florida where Ernie will receive military honors.
