She was born in Shulls Mills, North Carolina and grew up in Maryville, Tennessee, the daughter of George W. and Martha Agnes Green Robinette. She spent most of her married life in Newport News, Virginia, where Burl, her husband of over 60 years, was employed at the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station. They spent two years in the Philippines, where he worked during the Vietnam War. When he retired they relocated to Florida.
Carolyn was multi-talented and had many achievements in her life. She was an accomplished seamstress and an avid gardener, winning many awards for her arrangements. She, along with her husband and oldest son David, were amateur radio operators. They patched many phone calls to families from sailors out at sea. She and her husband were active in the Eastern Star and both greatly enjoyed Square Dancing for many years. She was very outgoing and made many close friends during the journey of her long life.
She is predeceased by her loving husband, her parents, sisters Mae Berry, Pearl Rymer, Ann Powers, Sadie Scoggins, and brothers Bonnie, John, George Jr., Max and Charles. She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved sons Daniel L. Spangler (Susan) of Archer, Florida, David T. Spangler (Lynn), grandchildren Lauren K. Franks and Geoffrey D. Spangler, great-grandchildren Zared Mohr, Rowan Franks, Cristian Spangler and one great-great-grandchild Kayleigh Mohr all of Virginia.
The family wishes to thank the many caregivers she had recently, in particular Patty Drew and her family who adopted Carolyn and became part of her family. We are forever grateful for the time and attention you gave her and for giving her cat, Tootsie, whom she loved dearly, a new home. Thank you.
