Sarah Broom Donoho

Sarah was born on Sept.1, 1930, in Alma, Illinois, the youngest of eight children born to Stanford and Nina Broom. She was married to Louie W. Donoho on July 1, 1951, in Salem, Illinois. She devoted her life fully to her husband and family, both in her gracious and very active role as wife to a career Army officer, and as the mother to three sons. As Lou rose to the rank of Colonel in the US Army, Sarah worked diligently beside him, entertaining his peers and volunteering with other Army wives, at the same time providing a stable and nurturing environment for her children as they moved from station to station throughout the world. During this time, she was honored to volunteer with the Red Cross as a Grey Lady, providing non-medical care for wounded soldiers in military hospitals.

Following Lou’s retirement, Sarah began a career as an insurance agent for GEICO, owning agencies in Anchorage and Fairbanks, Alaska, and Oceanside, California.  Following her retirement, Sarah moved to the Phoenix area, where she has been actively involved in a number of activities. Sarah was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church, which she attended regularly with her son, Dan and his wife LuAnne. She enjoyed her time as both a class member and in a leadership role for Bible Study Fellowship International for many years, as well as working as a volunteer for the Florence Brinton Litchfield Library. Sarah also enjoyed the company of many friends in Litchfield Park. Whether playing bridge together or out for a night of dinner and a movie, her laughter and joy were infectious.

While Sarah had numerous interests and activities, her true passion was for her family. From the simple: time spent playing cards or laughing for hours around the dinner table, to the extreme: touring New York City with all of her children and grandchildren on the occasion of her 80th birthday, being surrounded by family was her greatest joy. That example of unconditional love for her family will undoubtedly be her greatest legacy.

Sarah is survived by three sons: Daniel P. Donoho (LuAnne), David W Donoho (Carol) and Joseph S Donoho (Tammi); seven grandchildren: Megan, Alison, Joseph, Brent, Kevin, Katy and Patrick; three great-grandchildren: Adeline, Weiss, and Averie; two sisters, Mary and Louise, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Louie W Donoho, and five siblings: LaVange, Betty, Bill, Buck, and Jean.

A funeral service will be at Christ Presbyterian Church, 925 N Sarival Ave, Goodyear, Az 85338, at 10:00 am Friday, November 6. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Christ Presbyterian Church.
