Mr. Joseph Robinson Newton, III, age 88 of Goodyear, AZ died December 9, 2017 in Goodyear, AZ. He was born April 13, 1929 in Chicago, IL to Joseph Robinson Newton, Jr. and Blanche Hazzard. He served in the US Army from 1952 – 1954. Joseph was a gifted track coach. He belonged to the Illinois Track Coaches Association and the National Track Coaches Association. He was a member of the 1988 Seoul, South Korea Olympic staff. He won 28 Illinois State Cross Country championships, 21 National Cross Country titles as well as led his team to 46 West Suburban Cross Country Conference championships, and one state track title. A documentary was made on his success in life and coaching. During his tenure he was awarded numerous cross country Coach of the Year awards and was the recipient of the 1998 National Track Coach of the year award. He is the author of four training and motivational books.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Joan Christine Newton; daughter, Cindy L Carbaugh (Richard); sons, Thomas J. Newton and John M. Newton; and four grandchildren, Caitlin L. Pfaff, Kyle D. Pfaff (Allison), Julia R. Newton and Lauren Newton.
