Peggy Sue Wix-Carter

March 30, 1960 – June 1, 2023

Peggy Sue Wix-Carter was born Wednesday, March 30, 1960, to Betty Ball and the late Homer Wix in Portland, Tennessee. Peggy passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at her home in Nashville, Tennessee.

Peggy graduated from Westmoreland High School in 1978, where she participated in school activities and was a member of the Westmoreland Eagles cheerleader squad. She moved to Nashville, Tennessee where she completed her college education and began a selfless professional career and a life of dedicated service to the Nashville community and the state of Tennessee. Peggy’s tireless, dedicated, and impassioned commitment of service graced the lives of many for over 27 years.

Peggy completed her academic career at Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee, where in 1996 she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Work.

Peggy began her professional life of service directly out of college with the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services. Her commitment to serve and be of service led her on a professional journey of caring that included assuming responsibilities in Foster Care Reunification, Residential Case Manager, Assessment Specialist, Program Specialist, and Supervisor of the Resource Unit with the Regional Administrator.

Peggy’s decision to pursue a career in social work was not by chance. Her selfless dedication to helping children led her to, on occasion, take “hard-to-place” teenagers home with her to prevent them from being placed in a shelter because of their age.

Peggy had a keen sense of humor and would eagerly and readily share her joy with all who knew her for a moment or a lifetime. She knew no strangers. All children she met became her children. All strangers quickly became friends.

Peggy was an avid reader and one would rarely find her without a paperback in tow. She possessed a sharp wit and clever tongue that she would immediately and unapologetically unleash on anyone that “stepped out of bounds.”

Peggy loved her family and friends and cherished every moment she was with them. She offered a ready ear and possessed a loving heart and giving spirit that illuminated the lives of all who knew her. She was a loyal and guiding presence who enriched all who had the good fortune to walk in the light she so unselfishly spread.

Peggy was preceded in death by her father, Homer Wix, and her brother Tommy Wix.

She is survived by Daughter, Courtney Carter; Son, Grant Jones; Mother, Betty Gregory; Stepmother, Patricia Wix; Grandsons, Micah Kendall Carter, Kylo Jones, and Kyson Jones; Sister, Tammy Morris; Brothers, Michael Wix, Wayne Wix, and Sammy Jacobs.

Peggy was a member of Corona First Baptist Church and Edgefield Baptist Church

Family and friends will gather to remember Peggy at a visitation Thursday, June 15, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Goodlettsville, Tennessee followed by a celebration of life at 6:00 PM, with Bro. Steve Saunders officiating.

The burial will be 12:00 Friday, June 16, 2023 at Old Brush Cemetery, 573 Butler Rd, Portland, Tennessee. Serving as pallbearers, Grant Jones, Wayne Wix, Albert Palmer, Tim Kernell, Jaboski Carter, Trey Shue, Rick Laurent, Brandon Bryant.

The Repast will be 4:00 Friday, June 16, 2023 at the Elks Lodge, 308 Williams Ave. Madison, Tennessee 37115.
