He was born on April 20, 1940, in Dyersburg, TN, the second of five children of the late Dewey Fate Cooper and Dorothy Frances Kelly Cooper. Paul grew up mostly in Colorado.
He joined the United States Army in 1960 at the age of 19. He was sent to Fort Riley, KS for Boot Camp, then transferred to Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD for training in repairing telescopes, binoculars, and rangefinders on tanks. After a year, he was transferred to Kitziken Army Airfield in Germany.
After living several years in Colorado and then caring for his mother in Missouri, Paul moved to Tennessee in 1998. In 2000 he married Naomi Newman Cline. The couple resided in Madison, TN and enjoyed over 22 years of marriage until Naomi’s death in 2023. They were faithful members of the Church of the Firstborn in White House, TN. Paul worked as a parts runner for more than 15 years for Blackwood’s Truck Repair in Nashville.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Naomi Cooper, his close friend and brother-in-law Delmar Newman, and sister’s in-law Ruthie Newman, Bea (Lee) Carpenter, and Judy Newman.
He is survived by sons, Kelly Cooper, Tim Cooper and James Cooper, all of Colorado, Stepsons Mike (Pam) Cline and Randy (Judy) Cline, both of White House, siblings Fred O’Neil, and Bridgette Kern, of Missouri, brother-in-law Wendell Newman of Franklin, TN, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and his extended family at the Church of the Firstborn.
A special thank you to the staff and caregivers at Maple Cottage Assisted Living Transitions for their loving care and attention to Paul during the past two years, and to the caregivers of Gentiva Hospice.
Family and friends will gather to remember Paul at a visitation Thursday, January 2, 2025 from 12:00 until 2:00 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home 1150 South Dickerson Pike, Goodlettsville, Tennessee.
Services will be conducted in the chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home by Bro. Roger Brewer. Pall bearers will be Jim Gammons, Jody Chamberlain, Tim Hunter, Jon Mayhew, Chad Hardin and Keith Suttle. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens Garden of Gethsemane.
