Betty Brown Owens

Betty Brown Owens of Denham Springs, Louisiana passed away at home on June 19, 2023. Betty was born in Atlanta, Georgia on November 15, 1935, to Alleen Wright Brown and Joseph Edwin Brown. Betty married Malcolm Owens in December of 1955 and together they had 3 children, Sherri, Duane and Sonya. She and Mac lived in several places during their lifetime including California; Victoria, Texas; Shelby, North Carolina; Salisbury, North Carolina; Charlotte, North Carolina; Lake Charles, Louisiana; Cleveland, Tennessee; Haughton, Louisiana; Prairieville, Louisiana; and Denham Springs, Louisiana. Betty was a loving wife, dedicated mother, and hard-working homemaker. With each move, she turned their house into a home. She planned and prepared well-balanced meals for her family and kept a clean and beautiful home.

While her children were young, Betty was very involved in their lives. She spent time teaching them things that she knew and fostering their growth with love and encouragement. She also volunteered as a Cub Scout Den Mother for several years and organized many interesting and educational activities for the scouts in her den including manufacturing plant tours, visits by guest speakers, and fun arts and crafts. Once, she volunteered as a Girl Scout Neighborhood Cookie Chairman. Cases of cookies lined many walls of her home and made the house smell so good. Although there were hundreds of cases of cookies, none of them could be opened!

When her children were older, she went to work as a secretary/office manager. She worked for such companies as Overhead Door Company in Salisbury, North Carolina, and Flour Daniel in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She also served as a Calcasieu Parish Deputy Sheriff and later a Lake Charles Deputy Marshal. Betty and Mac were active in their churches, participating in fund raiser activities and missions to help those that were less fortunate than they were. Betty was also a leader in the United Methodist Women’s groups in her churches. Betty and Mac were members of the Village Lions Club in Haughton, Louisiana and also volunteered as dispatchers with the Bossier Parish Fire District #1.

Betty was a proud grandmother to 7 grandchildren and great-grandmother to 5 great-grandchildren. She loved and cherished every moment spent with them.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband of over 67 years, Malcolm Patrick Owens, who went home to heaven two months prior. Her family is very grateful that they are together once again. Betty is survived by daughter Sherri Cargill and husband John, son Duane and wife Dawn, and daughter Sonya Galloway and husband Chip. Grandchildren include Karen Barrios and partner Adam, Michael Bush and wife Hannah, Joshua Cargill, Shelby Owens and partner Kayci, Marty Owens and partner Caroline, Andy Nelson, and Maddie Nelson and partner McClain. Great-grandchildren include Merle Barrios, Jessie Barrios, Brady Bush, Camden Bush, and Cora Bush. Betty is also survived by many beloved Brown and Owens relatives.
