Kathleen Gannon, age 92, of New York, New York passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2023. Kathleen was born January 11, 1931 in Brooklyn NY. Her family at that time was one of the largest dairy concerns in New York City. She attended parochial school and graduated near the top of her class from St. Joseph’s High School. Following graduation in 1949 she took a position as an administrative assistant at The Equitable Insurance Company.
In 1953, she met her future husband Jim, fresh out of the army, at the Lost Battalion Hall in Queens, NY. They became engaged shortly after and married after a year of dating. While Jim began his career at the New York City Police Department, Kathy devoted herself to raising their three children, Kathleen, Anne and James. Her younger brother Raymond had become a priest in the tumultuous mid 1960’s and the house quickly became a meeting place for many priests and nuns with many days and nights of spirited discussion, Mass and folk music, all with Kathy as the hostess. The holidays were especially important to her and she had a flair for making each holiday special with an attention to detail that was second to none. A true Christian, anyone was welcome at her table and she went out of her way to make everyone comfortable and never a burden
Once her children had gotten older, she went back to work, first as a personal assistant to Mr. Sardi of the famous Sardi’s Restaurant and then as a teacher’s aide for the New York City School System.
If she was asked what she would most like to be remembered for, it would probably be that she was a devoted Catholic. Until her illness finally took over and physically got the best of her she attended Mass every day and was a daily Communicant. She was also a good listener and would often become a confidant to an eclectic mix of people. She might not tell someone what they wanted to hear but would often tell them what they needed to hear. With her obvious kindness, goodness and sincerity showing through it would be difficult to take her advice in any way but with the honesty in which it was offered.
In addition to her three children, Kathleen, Anne (Paul) and James (Kristi), she leaves behind six grandchildren, Lacey, Sabrina, Caitlin (Thomas), Ryan (Brett), James and Veronica and two great grandchildren, Connor and Callie.
Visitation for Kathleen will be held Tuesday, March 21, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Werst LaBella Funeral Home, 7141 Cooper Ave, Glendale, New York 11385. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, March 22, 2023 from 10:30 AM to 11:15 AM at St. Pancras Church-Glendale, 72-22 68th Street, Glendale, NY 11385.
