Our family lost a very important person this past week our "CHIEF"
My grandfather Herman was a loving husband to a Eileen for over 60 years. He was an amazing, caring, generous and sometimes even funny father of 4, grandfather of 8 and great-grandfather of 11.
Herman was a World War II veteran. He was a machine operator, and rifleman. He received several medals of honor between February 28, 1945 to August 4, 1946 including a World War II victory medal.
Once back in the states he became a NYC Sanitation worker. When he retired from the sanitation department, he became a school bus driver until he retired.
He lived his best life and left us 94 years young. We will miss him more than words could say.
Rest In Peace Grandpa we Love you always and forever and a day.

Our family lost a very important person this past week, OUR CHIEF.
My grandfather was a loving husband to my grandmother Eileen for over 60 years. He was an amazing, caring, generous, and sometimes even funny...
Father to 4, grandfather to 8, and great grandfather "Pops" to 11!
My grandfather was a World War II veteran. He received several medals during his tour, including a World War II victory medal. He was a true veteran who always stood and saluted the red, white, and blue, even marching every year with my dad at the Memorial Day parade until he was 91, where he was given the title of Grand Marshall. It's no wonder one of his favorite spots to hang out at was the American Legion POST. He always made sure to get a game of cards going, while enjoying a nice cold 7&7.
He enjoyed spending time with his family on the weekends, and first bought a summer home in New Fairfield, Connecticut - for his children, where he made sure to put his sons and son in laws to work making a wall In front of the house or digging out a basement. When my grandparents decided to sell their Connecticut home, they moved onto Shohola Falls Trails, Pennsylvania, and this is where I became very close with my grandfather. I spent most summers growing up there and he spent lots of nights calling the security to send a car to get me, because I broke curfew. Both my grandpa and I knew all the security guards by name. He would be sitting in his recliner chair and when I would get dropped off, he would say no pool, no clubhouse, go to bed. I would say ok and the next day he would have my bike outside the shed ready for me to go to the pool and clubhouse. Chief could never stay mad. He made sure all his grandchildren and even some of his great grandchildren always had a fun place to visit in the summer.
My grandpa also enjoyed sports. He accompanied my brother Dutch on his RGVM little league baseball tournament to Russia---yep Russia. I'm not sure how much baseball he watched, but he came home with lots of Russian doll souvenirs for all of us. He also was front and center behind home plate to watch my now husband Jamie propose to me. He continued
watching us play sports and even watched his great grandson, Braden, win a little league world series.
Minnie's (that what he called my mom) cooking was something Herman loved. His favorite was sauerbraten, and if he couldn't get it at Zum Stammtisch, he made sure she made it for him. She took care of him daily and every holiday she had a plate set for him.
To say he was a family man and lived for family is an understatement. He took care of all of us making sure our birthdays were celebrated and Santa always came to visit at his house, and everyone received a gift. His smile was as infectious as his chuckle. I will miss it but never forget it.
I would like to end by saying my grandfather was one of the strongest people I know. He never complained and always put others before himself, to have known him is to have loved him.
Grandpa - I will not say goodbye because I just can't, but I do want you to know:
Grandfathers have ears that truly listen, arms that always hold.
Love that's never ending and a HEART MADE OUT OF GOLD.
So Grandpa, my Chief and Pops,
Go fly with the Eagles above and may you rest peacefully now just like you deserve.
I love you forever and a day.
