Gander, Edward Francis (AKA The Chief) 8/23/1931—11/9/2024
Son of Robert and Mary. Devoted husband to Marion. Wonderful brother to Robert, Raymond, and Eileen. Loving father of Catherine (Brian), Karen (Brian), Thomas (Jackie), and Susan (Robert). Adored grandfather of Erin (Adam), Ryan (Nancy), Brian, Lauren (Pete), Kaitlin (Breandan), Brittany (Kevin), Taylor (Zach), Emma (Caleb), Robert and Kelli. The Chief, as he was affectionately called, was also blessed with 12 Great Grandchildren—Joseph, Elijah, Thomas, Kellan, Kenzie, Wyatt, Kiera, Charlotte, Kyler, Greyson, Violet & Kendall. His love of his family knew no boundaries.
The Chief led a life of service. He loved his country. He joined the USMC at 17 and was proud to have been part of the battle at the Chosin Reservoir. He later joined the FDNY and served for 38 years, retiring as a Battalion Chief. He could spend hours telling stories and sharing memories. The Chief was also a Boy Scout leader at St. Pancras Troop 383.
Upon retirement, Ed and Marion moved to the Poconos, where he joined the Pocono Township Volunteer Fire Department. The Ganders became globetrotters in their golden years, seeing as many wonderful and exotic locales as they could. They returned to NY a few years ago to be closer to family. Once Marion passed in February, life was a bit more challenging for Ed. At 93, he let us know he was more than ready to go be with Mama. The Chief had an amazing run and will be missed by all who were touched by his love, loyalty and bravery.
Services will be held at Werst & Labella funeral home.
