Donna lived a life marked by grace, strength, and unwavering love. From her early days growing up on a farm, she met every chapter of life with quiet resilience and a heart full of kindness. She began her career as a switchboard operator and went on to make history as the first woman appointed as a bank officer in Western Colorado. Donna didn’t just accept challenges—she transformed them into opportunities. At Mesa United Bank, she was tasked with building the foundation for the position of senior bank auditor. Her work caught the attention of lead auditors in Denver, who adopted many of her practices into their own programs. Donna was later named Senior Auditor over all United Banks of Western Colorado and devoted more than 30 years to the banking industry.
Outside of work, Donna found joy in simple pleasures—waterskiing, camping, and most of all, her family. She married Edward Powell in 1957, and together they lovingly raised three children: Valarie, Brian, and Kenn. She was also a loving mother to her adopted son Eddie Powell. Her devotion to her family was constant—always present, always supportive, always loving.
She adored her five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and played an active, joyful role in their lives. Her warmth, laughter, and unshakable sense of fun are deeply missed.
After Edward’s passing in 1995, Donna remained in Arizona, where she stayed close to her community and worked at the office in the resort where she lived. In 2008, she found love again with Harold Kempema. They shared nearly eight beautiful years together before his passing in 2016.
A year later, Donna moved to Texas to be near her daughter, Valarie. It was during this time that she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, a journey she faced with the same grace she carried through her entire life.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 28th at 10:00 a.m. at Resthaven Park Cemetery in Glendale, AZ.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity close to your heart.
Until we meet again—Godspeed, Donna. You are deeply loved, and you will be dearly missed
