M. Virginia Woodard, 97, born November 4, 1918 in Kansas City, MO, died peacefully at her home on July 22, 2016. The first of 7 children to Lucille Mae and Edward E. Moberly of Kansas City, Virginia was the last to pass. Her father died in a work-related accident when she was only 13 years old, leaving her and her mother to raise 6 small children. She graduated from East High School in 1936 and married Robert (Bob) Lyle Woodard April 12, 1942, right after the U.S. joined WWII. Bob served as an Inventory Control Specialist with the Navy stationed in Olathe, KS. He worked for Trans World Airlines for 40 years as a Purchasing Agent. Virginia worked for the North Kansas City School district as a Cafeteria Manager at Englewood and Chapel Hill elementary schools. Both retired in 1980.
Bob and Virginia traveled the world with their daughters, Sharon and Sandi, to many places most people only dream to see. As avid square dancers with the Do Si Doers throughout their life, they traveled the country to attend Square Dance Conventions, making new friends along the way. Virginia enjoyed sewing their costumes and offering their basement for square dance lessons. Bowling or playing cards/games with family and friends became favorite pastimes. Barry Christian Church played a central role in their life, providing the family a spiritual compass. Virginia held the distinction of being the oldest living member of the church when she passed.
Virginia is preceded in death by her husband Bob, 6 siblings: Donald E. Moberly, Billy L. Moberly, Alma Jayne Gnefkow, Ferna Mae Wicker, Anna Lou Cranfill, and Betty Sue Ellis, and 2 great-grandsons Logan and Samson Schell. She is survived by her two daughters, Sharon and her husband, Stephen Horton of Kansas City, MO, Sandra and her husband Gary Pitts of Kennesaw, GA, 3 grandchildren Daniel Horton (Shawnee Mission, KS), Erin (Pitts) Schell (Kennesaw, GA), and Tecia Pitts (Boiling Springs, SC), 4 great-grandchildren: Sydney, Claire, and Madeline Horton, Sally Schell, and many extended family members.
Visitation will be at 10 am on Thursday, July 28, at Barry Christian Church, 1500 Barry Rd, Kansas City, MO. Her Farewell Service will immediately follow at 11 am. A short graveside service afterwards will be at White Chapel Cemetery in Gladstone. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Barry Christian Church.
