Dorothy E. Weiss

The family moved to Detroit, Michigan for 2 years, before the depression forced a return to Kansas. They purchased the family farm outside of Clay Center, where Dorothy was raised from age 2 through high school. She walked two miles each day to school along country roads and laughed about feeding her leftover lunch to her dog, Skippy, who came to greet her each afternoon. Dorothy moved to town for her high school years and graduated from Clay Center High School.

On her 19th birthday (1950) she married Norman Lee Weiss, the love of her life. The couple lived in both Wichita and Manhattan, Kansas, before permanently settling in Kansas City, Missouri in 1961. Over the years they expanded both their home and their family. Dorothy was a meticulous housekeeper and a profusive gardener. She regularly harvested and canned over 100 quarts of green beans each summer. Once the children were in school, Dorothy went back to work and spent the final 18 years of her career at Farmland Industries.

Dorothy and Norman traveled all over the world, one of the perks of Norman’s 39-year career with Continental Airlines. They were members of a square dance club for years. Dorothy adored her “bridge girls” and they spent many hours gossiping and playing cards. Avondale United Methodist was their church home and she volunteered there often.

Dorothy is preceded in death by husband of 63 years, Norman.

Dorothy is survived by her 3 children, Diana L. (Mike) Swift of Lee’s Summit, Regina R. Province (Keith) of Lee’s Summit, and Douglas W. Weiss of Kansas City; 4 grandchildren, Stephanie (Spencer) Hibler, Brian (Kaitlin) Swift, Paul Province and Luke Province. Dorothy lives on through her three great grandchildren, Carder Hibler, Colten Hibler and Peyton Swift.
