Samuel Vokey

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Samuel Vokey at the age of 89, he died peacefully at home on June 20th 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Glace Bay, N.S. on November 27,1929 to the late Samuel and Annie May (Delaney) and step-mother Rowena (Roberts).

Dad was a very hard worker who started working at an early age helping his dad in the family shoe shop business. He then worked for DEVCO Corporation as a miner in 26 Colliery, then in 1976 he worked as a Councillor for DEVCO until his retirement in 1988. He was also involved in his local UMW union. He was on the Board of Directors for the Glace Bay General Hospital dedicating his time to get the new hospital built. He was a very kind and loving man. He would often play guitar and sing at many parties. After his retirement he took up the hobby of woodworking making many things for friends and family. He always enjoyed gardening, spending many hours keeping his yard looking great.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Olive (Caines), 5 daughters, Diane (Sheldon) Briggs, Ontario; Debbie (Gary) Scott; Paula (Blaine) McKinnon; Sandra (Jimmy) Devison; Pamela (Darrell) Gouthro of Glace Bay. He also leaves behind 9 Grandchildren; Troy, Craig, Darryl, Kenny, Nicole, Scott, Dale, Linsey, Steven and 12 Great Grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers David MacNaughton (Nancy), Truro; Dave (Johanne); Tom; and sister Eleanor, of PEI.

Besides his parents he was pre-deceased by brothers John (Florence) Ontario; Bill, Ontario; sisters Jeanette (Jim), Manitoba; Evelyn (George), Ontario; Margie (Frank), New Brunswick. Also the loss of a son Jason at birth.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home, there will be no visitation or service as per family wishes. Burial to take place at a later date.
