Herbert Martin Nolen, age 79, of Georgetown, Texas, passed away on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Estrella Oaks Rehabilitation and Care Center. Herb was born January 22, 1932 in Burnet, Texas to Hubert Allen and Ola Stipp Nolen, both preceding him in death. The family moved to Austin, Texas in 1942 where Herb graduated from Austin High School in 1950. He attended the University of Texas and served two years in the United States Navy, stationed in San Diego, California.
In 1951, Herb went to work for Jefferson Chemical Company (now Texaco Chemical Company) where he worked until his retirement in 1992 as Safety Supervisor.
Herb achieved his longtime dream of flying by earning his private pilot license in 1979. As a member of the Civil Air Patrol, he combined his love of flying and community service. He became a licensed amateur radio operator in 1974 and later achieved its highest license class. Herb was an active member of the Central Texas ham community and enjoyed participating in public service events and the licensing of new ham operators. His last call sign was W5HMN.
Herb is survived by his wife of 56 years, Donna, and daughter Nancy and husband Matthew Thomas of Murphy, Texas.
Herb was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Georgetown, Texas.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Scott & White Hospital in Round Rock, Texas and Estrella Oaks in Georgetown, texas for the wonderful care they gave Herb.
Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 4, 2011 at the Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, texas. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, September 5, 2011 at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas.
