George David Slaton

Raised in the rural town of St Jo, Texas, George excelled in school and high school sports where he led his high school football team as quarterback. Graduating at the young age of 17, George began his career with Southwestern Bell as a janitor in Borger, Texas. Although shy and quiet at the time, his industrious, eager and dedicated work ethic quickly began to move him into new positions within the company. George was responsible for building the long distance dialing system and microwave system in the Texas Panhandle area in and around Borger. With a promotion to management, George transferred to Texas City and Abilene where he held positions before transferring to Austin, Texas in 1970. Once in Austin, he led the phone line installation and maintenance at the LBJ Ranch for President Johnson. Many of the years of his career in Austin he managed the Test Center, before his final department assignment where among other accomplishments, George managed the introduction, installation and maintenance of T1 lines into the Austin area until his retirement in 1986. George is a lifetime member of Southwestern Bell Pioneers and enjoyed meeting with old friends as often as possible. After leaving Southwestern Bell, George and his wife Elnora owned two “I Can’t Believe It’s Yogurt!” franchises in Austin, Texas.

Although once shy and quiet as a young man, George quickly became the guy who never met a stranger. His witty sense of humor served him well; he was a true, loyal friend who would do anything for a friend. A jack of trades and a talented craftsman, George could do just about anything he put his mind to. He enjoyed working in his yard, his workshop building furniture his daughter designed and on the family ranch in Elgin where he forged lifelong friendships with Duke and Mary Ducharme and later Clyde Mann. George’s annual elk hunting trips and fishing trips with his nephew Tim Atkins brought him back to his love for the outdoors, horseback riding and camping. A doting grandfather, George was an active supporter of his granddaughters and their endeavors and took great joy in spending time with them.

George is preceded in death by his loving wife, Elnora Slaton, parents, Brittain and Eugenia Slaton, sister, Betty Wingo and niece, Gwynneth Roper. He is survived by his children, Sharon Brittain, Mike Slaton, Philip Slaton, and Treasa Telle, brother, Thad Slaton, grandchildren, Jay and Damon Held and Ilissa and Lauril Telle, four great-grandchildren and eight nieces and nephews along with their families.

A time of visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas from 6:00P.M. to 8:00P.M. Funeral services will be at First United Methodist Church in Round Rock, Texas on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 1:00P.M. Interment will take place at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Elgin, Texas following the service.
