Carolyn Garrett Cline

Carolyn was born on March 16th 1947 in Gary, Indiana to Robert and Irene Garrett. She was the oldest of three. She attended St. Rosa Catholic High School and graduated in 1965. She attended college in Boston at Boston University and met Michael Dana Cline. They married on March 16, 1974 in Cambridge, MA. She completed her Ph.D at Indiana University and went on to be a Professor of Journalism at Alabama University, University of Texas, and University of Southern California. In her years as a professor, she touched many of her student’s lives.

Her proudest accomplishment was writing "The Velvet Ghetto: The Impact of the Increasing Percentage of Women in Public Relations and Business Communication" in 1986. She was one of the first women to lead the feminist scholarly movement in the field of public relations.

In 1980 she gave birth to her first daughter Victoria “Vicky” Cline and in 1982 gave birth to her second daughter Dayna Cline. Dayna passed in 1998 from cancer.

She was very active in her church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, serving in the vestry and choir. She also loved doing crafts, writing and frogs. She will be missed by many in her community and leaves a hole in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her father Robert, her mother Irene, her husband Michael, and her daughter Dayna. She is survived by her daughter Victoria Combs (Cline), her son in law Nate Combs, her brother John Garrett, her sister Patricia Wakins (Garrett), her grandchildren Emily, Noah, and Josie. As well as many loved ones.

Donations can be made in her name to The Jester Foundation (thejester.org) or to St. John’s Episcopal Church. Services will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Dec 17th at 2pm.
