Mr. Martin was born September 28, 1926, in Wake County, NC, a son of the late W. L. Martin and Euva Perry.
Mr. Martin served our country through his service to the United States Navy during World War II. Recollections of his time stationed in the Atlantic on the battleship U.S.S. Wyoming were shared throughout his life. After his time in active duty and the United States Navy Reserves, the tenacity of the young man who convinced his mother to sign paperwork allowing him to enlist at 17 years old was present. Remaining physically active and fit, he rode his bicycle regularly until the age of 90. He was often found leading his grandchildren on two-wheeled expeditions through his neighborhood. Articulate and bold, Mr. Martin also possessed an incredible mechanical aptitude. He not only owned an appliance store at one time, but also knew how to repair any technology sold. He appraised real estate for many years and held one of the oldest real estate brokers licenses in the state. Also licensed as a NC Auto Dealer, he enjoyed educating others on the origin and engineering of automakers from Austin Healey to Triumph. A firm believer in consumer advocacy, history, and knowledge through research, the wealth of information he provided to those around him will be carried on for generations.
Mr. Martin is survived by his daughter, Dana Martin Davis (Rick), his daughter, Angela Dee Martin, his son, William L. Martin III, his sisters, Euva M. Freeze and Martha Grissom (Joseph) his five grandchildren; Weston Davis, Corban Davis, Merrin Davis, Gabrielle Martin, and William Martin IV. Survivors also include numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 70 years, Betty Rollins Martin, and a brother, David J. Martin.
A graveside service with full military honors will take place 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 25, at Gaston Memorial Park, 1200 S New Hope Rd. Gastonia, NC, 28054
