Maxine Russell Hicks

She was a strong woman who sacrificed much for her three children, raising them alone after she was widowed at the young age of 29. She never remarried but was devoted to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. After her retirement, she resided with her son in Gardendale who lovingly provided her a home where he and Joan cared for her for many years. She moved to Mobile to live with her daughter 3-1/2 years ago due to her declining health.

Maxine was born to Robbie and Robert Russell on April 7, 1933. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl, her brothers Charlie, Jack, Gene, Butch, her sister Betty and her daughter Denise Wakefield. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Bennett and son, Richard Hicks (Joan), her grandchildren Angela Zimmerman (Tod), Christy Mitchell (Jason), Melissa Box (Robert) and Alicia Montgomery (Wayne); her great grandchildren Drake Zimmerman (Elizabeth), Lindsey Mitchell, Devan Zimmerman, Brittain Mitchell, Weston Box, Junior Montgomery, Alex Montgomery, Tessa Montgomery and her soon to be born great-great-grandson, Cash August Zimmerman; her brother Jerry (Jean), son-in-law Donnie Wakefield and his wife Robin and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was a member of New Georgia Baptist Church in Fultondale, AL. Her pastor, Bro. Thomas Graves was faithful to keep in constant contact with her after her move to Mobile.

We loved her dearly and will miss her always but have great peace knowing that she is now in the arms of Jesus, her savior.

A visitation for Maxine will be held Saturday, May 28, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel, 2029 Decatur Highway, Gardendale, AL 35071, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM. Maxine will be laid to rest in Mount Carmel Cemetery, West Blocton, AL.
