Gary Gene Ledbetter, age 75, was born September 6, 1946, in Pinson, AL, to Albert and Christine Ledbetter and passed away May 1, 2022, on his way to his classroom to teach Sunday School at Concord Baptist Church in Fairview, Alabama.
Gary served in the U.S. Air Force (1966¬-1970) and U.S. Navy (1982-retiring in 2001). He had an adventurous and entrepreneurial spirit, loved to travel, and was a master at building and fixing things: he had many adventures flying small-engine airplanes, fishing in Alaska, and driving cross-country in all manner of vehicles. He always had a project going, whether building or repairing a house, deck, shed, or car. And as a devout abstainer of social media, somehow managed to go viral on Facebook with a video of him and his brother Ronnie and the Jeep they tinkered on for many weeks. His last words on that video (after much effort and laughter), “Nuttin’ to it,” express his positive outlook and sense of humor perfectly.
Gary loved his family and close friends and was a committed Christian and church member. He is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Christine, brothers Craig and Donnie, sister-in-law Eunice (Craig), and son-in-law Jimmy Lawson. He is survived by wife Judy Lee Ledbetter (m. 1966), brothers Ronnie and Nathan Ledbetter and sisters-in-law Judy (Ronnie), Gay (Nathan) and Rosanna (Donnie), and his children and their families: daughter Janet Ledbetter Lawson, grandchildren Maegan and Mallori and great-grandchildren Bentley and Skyler; daughter Amy Ledbetter Miller, son-in-law Brock Miller, grandchildren Ashlyn and Laurel; and son Jeff and daughter-in-law Naomi Clinansmith Ledbetter, grandchildren Emily and grandson-in-law Keith Sullivan, Nicole, and his favorite grandson Ty.
A visitation for Gary will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel, 2029 Decatur Highway, Gardendale, AL 35071, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM.
