John attended and graduated from East High School. After graduating, he enlisted in the military, Navy Branch and stationed in Hawaii. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After his discharge, he entered into the workforce. In 1960, he started working as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He remained a letter carrier until he retired in 1989.
In 1958, John gave his life to the Lord. He had attended Church of Christ on Washington and Donaldson where he met and married Alice Mebane for 42 years. He was a member of the Brotherhood at Church of Christ and served as a deacon. His church membership transited to God’s Grace Deliverance Apostolic Faith Church under the late Bishop Seaborn, where he also served as a deacon.
John enjoyed working with his hands as he loved fixing things around the house, he loved helping people, traveling, watching sports, and especially wrestling. But there was nothing he valued more than his relationship with the Lord.
The Lord called John home on December 20, 2022; he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Washington; son, Keith Washington; parents Aron Washington and Margaret Emerson; sisters Lois Newman and Betty Evans; sisters in law Anna Knox and Betty Mebane; brothers in law Leon Knox, Levander Mebane, and Harold Newman.
Left to cherish his memory are daughters Lori and Alison Washington, sister in law Mary Esther Newman, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, December 29, 2022 from 11:00 am – 12:30pm with John's funeral service immediately to follow at Schoedinger Northeast, 1051 East Johnstown Road, Gahanna, OH 43230.
