John was born in Moundsville, W.Va November 30, 1932. He was adopted and lived in Moundsville until his teens. He moved to Steubenville and completed high school. Following high school, John served in the Army from December 1952 – February 1955. After the Army he moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he worked in the steel mills and as a property manager. He and wife, Ernestine, started their family in Cleveland with Richard M. Carter (1958), Michael J Carter (1959) and John Carter Jr (1964). The family moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1967 where their 4th son, Andre (1972) was born. John went to work for the Department of Youth Services as a group life officer and eventually the Director of Group Life at TCY, Buckeye Youth Center and Circleville Youth Center for over 30 years.
He was retired for over 25 years living a good life.
John coached men’s and women’s softball teams, spending many a night and weekends at Berliner and across the Midwest. As a coach, he won two National Titles, one with the Columbus Bucks in 1985 and a second with the women’s team Ubiquity in 1990.
He was happiest working on home projects, spending weekends at Lake Erie, cruising on his boat and eating fresh fish from Lake Erie, driving his convertible corvettes, sitting outside in his back yard in the summer listening to jazz and traveling with our friends, The Johnsons and Conners. In 15 years, we made 22 road trips all over the United States. His favorites were Las Vegas and Nashville. The last trip was to Ocean City, Maryland to celebrate his 15th wedding anniversary with his wife, Cheri Carter.
Preceded in death by his son, Michael and former wife and mother of his sons, Florence Ernestine Carter.
John is survived by wife, Cheryl Carter; sons, Richard, John Jr., and Andre; grandchildren, Sarita (Geoff) Palmer, Tyler Clemons (Ashanti), Richard Clemons, Brandon Ezell, Jasmine Litsy, Damiano Jones, Anthony Carter, Amber Carter, Karrington Carter, Cinia Mitchell, Hadassah Shelton, Stevon Carter, Mona Carter, Michael, Carter, and Shelby Rosemond; many great-grandchildren; and special friends, Donna Alexander, Howard, and Cynthia Johnson.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 16, 2023 at Schoedinger Margarum Northeast, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd., Gahanna, Ohio, 43230. Funeral Service will start at 1:00 p.m. Interment with military honors will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
