Thomas Wayne Wood

Thomas Wayne Wood, age 77, of Steele, AL passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024. A funeral service will be held at 12:30PM on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at Collier-Butler Funeral Chapel. Rev. Mike Niemi and Rev. Gary Cardwell will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Attalla, AL. Collier-Butler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will accept friends from 10:30AM until 12:30PM at the funeral home on Tuesday.

Wayne was a graduate of Etowah High School class of 1965 and became a proud graduate of Jacksonville State University in 1969. He loved people and always looked for the “Best” in everyone. This wonderful attitude resulted in a successful career in Human Resources with Gulf State Steel (LTV-Republic) and Valspar for over 47 years. Upon retirement, he chose to pursue a new career selling real estate with Kell Realty in Ashville, AL.

Wayne had a passion and love for working in his yard and garden. He always grew plenty of vegetables so he could share with family and friends. Wayne was a lifelong Alabama fan and loved going to UA football games. He especially loved watching his grandson, Jace, play baseball.

Wayne loved his Lord and Savior. He was a long-time member of Meadowbrook Church and the Cornerstone Life Group. He loved singing in the Meadowbrook 55+ Senior choir. He participated in St. Clair Master Gardener, NE Red Elephant Club, UA Alumni, and Society of Human Resource Managers.

Wayne was preceded in death by his Godly parents, Tom and Pauline Wood and his precious daughter, Heather Paige Wood.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Debbie Wood; his daughter, Kristy Wood; stepsons, Kevin (Brittany) Hawkins, and Chris (Jennie) Hawkins; grandchildren, Alan Hopkins, Madison Crawford, Jace Hawkins, Garrett Hawkins, and Jackson Hawkins. In addition to his immediate family, he leaves a host of special friends and family members.

His kindness, compassion, goodness, and contagious smile will live in our hearts forever. He will deeply be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Pallbearers will be Roger Adams, Spence Adcock, David Countryman, Zack Gilliland, Harry McLendon, and Larry Means.

Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Millirons, Ray Peoples, Tony Howell, Harold Sherrell, Jerry Smith, and Meadowbrook Cornerstone Life Group.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Meadowbrook 55+ Senior Choir or the American Heart Association.
