Bob was born in Newark, OH to H. Robert and Ruth Pine and grew up in
Rockville, MD. He was a graduate of Richard Montgomery High School, attended New
Mexico Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy, and is a graduate of
Northeastern University, Boston, MA. Bob also completed the four-year program of
Education for Ministry as administered by the School of Theology, University of the
South, Sewanee, TN. Bob settled in Gadsden, Alabama in 1969, and worked in
management in the aluminum recycling and smelting industry. Bob has been an active
member of the Gadsden community having served on the Boards of YMCA, Rotary
Club, Gadsden Concert Association, Gadsden Track Club, The American Red Cross,
and MANNA. He was instrumental in the founding of BIG MEN, an organization whose
function was to bring entertainment and concerts to Gadsden. Bob was a faithful
member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter where he served as a Vestry
member, Junior and Senior Warden, and as a lay Eucharistic Minister.
Bob’s ministries included work with Kairos Prison Ministry, Cursillo Renewal
Movement, Raffa Home, Way of the Cross Food Ministry and EFM Mentor. Bob
authored Pious Bob: Daily Devotionals and was a weekly contributor to The Messenger.
He is survived by his wife Penelope Matthews Pine; sons Matthew Francis Pine
(Angeles) and Robert Halsey Pine, Jr.; Granddaughter Ana Pine; brother Charles A.
Pine and sister Rebecca L Pine; and several nieces and nephews. His family
expresses their sincere gratitude to Comfort Care Hospice, especially Rachael, Deb and
Brianna. We would like to thank his friends, church family and especially the
Brotherhood of Saint Andrew for their love and care during his illness.
Services will be held at Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter on Friday, October
14th, at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Carl Saxton and the Rev. Polly Holcomb Robb officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Episcopal Church of the Holy
Comforter, Turning Point Foundation, or to the charity of your choice.
