John wasn't just a friend to me; he was like a brother. We shared countless memories, many rounds of golf (with his brother Tim) in all kinds of weather,  the time we almost missed our flight back from the Keys, his 40th birthday celebration in Bimini, deep sea fishing, watching Alabama Football, attending the Master’s tournament, parties at Hunan's with all the gang, tubing on Ichetucknee Springs, SCUBA classes, we weathered Hurricane Irma while staying with him and Kelly, and he lived with me and Mary in Key West for a short period. We talked at length about Bama football, and he shared stories about his family's business and selling books while I shared tales from my time in the Marine Corps.
In the photograph above, I had flown from Key West to Birmingham for a football game, and John and Kelly picked me up. After a fun-filled day, they dropped me back at the airport the next morning for my return flight.
Although a good friend of mine didn't know John as well as I did, he summed up his personality perfectly when he said, "I may not have known him like Rod did, but I always had a great time whenever I was around him."
During the past two challenging years, I spoke with John regularly, and despite the difficulties, his optimistic attitude and unwavering determination to improve never wavered.
The absence of John from my life and the world at large has left me with a huge hole in my heart. It's hard to imagine either being the same without him. I will forever treasure the memories of our conversations and time spent together, some of which I will share to honor his memory, while others I will keep to myself. His loss has left a significant void in my life, and I will miss him deeply.
