On the afternoon of July 22, 2024, Joan Hope Stewart took the hand of Jesus and passed peacefully at Riverview Regional Medical Center. She was 93 years old and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Joan was born in Hartville, Ohio to Wilfred L. and Mildred C. Schrader on November 2, 1930. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Bob Jones University and began teaching English upon graduating. She met the love of her life, Rev. Hubert C. Stewart, while in college and they later married in July of 1955. The couple had been married for almost 66 years at the time of Hubert’s passing. They were blessed with two children, Randy and Teri, 4 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
Survivors include son, Randy L. Stewart and his wife, Beverly, of McKinney, Texas; daughter, Teri Lancaster and her husband, Brad, of Southside, Alabama; four grandchildren: Amber Garrett and husband, Brannon, of Peachtree City, Georgia; Brandi Lancaster of Peachtree City, Georgia; Benjamin Stewart and wife, Christina, of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Laurie Stewart of North Hollywood, California; four great-grandchildren: Hunter Richardson, Braden Garrett, Bella Lancaster, and Maria Stewart.
She is preceded in death by husband, Rev. Hubert C. Stewart, parents, Wilfred and Mildred Schrader, brother, Daryl Schrader, and great-grandson Eli Garrett.
Throughout the course of her life, she actively assisted the Presbyterian ministry by serving in various roles at the seven churches pastored by her husband, which included playing the piano, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and leading crafts for Vacation Bible School among other things. Because of this, they took up residence in several towns among the Gulf Coast states of Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama before deciding to settle in Rainbow City, Alabama upon retirement and making Rainbow Presbyterian their home church.
Joan loved music; listening to it, playing it, and singing it. She pursued this passion of hers through attending concerts, participating in the church choir as well as some small community theatres, and serving as the church pianist. She also loved people and taking part in social activities including the Gadsden Greeters, Games Group, church Supper Club, and Senior Adults Living Triumphantly. In addition, she and her husband shared a love of gardening that included an active membership in the Gadsden chapter of the Master Gardeners Association. To know Joan Stewart was to love her.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26. 2024 at Rainbow Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Rainbow Memorial Gardens. Collier-Butler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will accept friends from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of the service at the church on Friday.
