Dorothy Jewel Palmer of Gadsden, Alabama arrived at her heavenly home on July 20th at the age of 90. She was called D.J., first by her father, then lifelong by family and friends. She was born on November ninth, 1930, in Blanche, Alabama to Roy and Pearl Lawless. She married Henry Grady Palmer, the love of her life, on her sixteenth birthday. They had 57 wonderful years together.
She is survived by daughter, Debby (Bruce) Word and son, Rod Palmer. She loved and served them as long as she could. She is also survived by and was so proud of her Grands and Great Grands: Christopher (Julie) Word, Anna Claire and Palmer; Amanda Ann Palmer; Benjamin (Priscilla) Word, Grayson, Liam and Emma Jewel; Drs. Caleb (Margaret) Palmer; Bethany Word; Joshua (Jamie) Palmer, Ezra, Judah; also, a brother, Parnell Lawless, whom she loved dearly; In-laws, Coy Davis, Ava Palmer and Sharon Palmer; a host of nieces and nephews, and special friend Shelby Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Pearl Lawless; Husband, Grady Palmer; Two infant Sons; Sisters, Mae Grogan, Bobbie Tarwater, and Elma Newell.
Mrs. Palmer was a Godly woman, wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher. She loved to read and study God’s Word and taught Sunday School for over fifty years. She loved to sing and play the piano and faithfully sang in her church choir. She was a homemaker most of her life but taught K5 at Coosa Christian for several years and loved her students. She was a fabulous cook and entertained countless
people in their home. She was a pilot and loved flying with the family. She loved sewing, crafts, and gardening. She loved life and God blessed her with many years.
The family gives special thanks to her sitter, Charlotte Greer, truly a God send. Also, she was so blessed with Amedisys Hospice. Thank you, Dr. Jason Junkins, Hannah, Kelli, Kendra, Michelle, and Matt for making this journey a little bit easier.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren. The funeral service will be at Collier Butler Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 pm on Friday evening. The celebration of her life will begin at 7:00 pm.
