Clayton Durrell ‘Barney’ Barnes, 62, passed away late Saturday evening, November 24, 2012. He was born in Gadsden, Alabama, on July 6, 1950 and was a lifelong Gadsden resident. After graduating from Gadsden High School in 1968, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for two years. After his service, he went to work for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. and retired from there in 2010 after 36 years of service. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Service is directing.
Clayton loved sports, especially Alabama football and the Atlanta Braves, and he loved having lively discussions with his sons about anything sports related. He was so proud of the men his sons grew up to be. In recent years he bought a beach house and truly enjoyed his retirement, especially his breakfast meetings with his long time friends Robert and Peanut. He will be sorely missed by both friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his mother Bonnie Sue Trussell Bradley, his father Jesse Barnes, his stepmother Carolyn Barnes, his stepfather Mack Bradley, and his brother Bruce Bradley.
He is survived by his sons Matthew Blake Barnes and Mark Bradley (Katharine) Barnes and granddaughter Elizabeth. He is also survived by his brothers Steve (Charlotte) Bradley, Mike (Patricia) Barnes, and Jesse (Tricia) Barnes, and sisters Donna (John) Gilentine and Nancy (Danny) Spurlock. He was also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was especially close to his aunt, Barbara Harris.
Family will receive friends at Collier Butler from 6-9 on Tuesday evening, and services will be held Wednesday at 11. Pall bearers will include David West, Alton Roe, Dennis ‘Peanut’ Crawford, Merle Stapler, Robert Casey, and Billy Fordham.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The American Heart Association.
