Funeral services will be at 3 pm Saturday May 19 at Gadsden Church of Christ for Betty Johnson, 74, Gadsden. Burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery, Collier Butler Funeral Home directing. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years Ronny Johnson, mother Ruby Smith Abney, father William McKinley Abney, sister Sarah (Don) Howse, sister in law Nila Abney and brothers James Abney and Hoyt Abney and brother in law Jerry Johnson. She is survived by her sons Greg (Melanie) Johnson, Gadsden, Daniel Johnson, Gadsden, Mack (Lorri) Johnson, Harvest, granddaughter Savannah Johnson, sister Martha Elrod, sisters in law Glenna Abney, Nancy Johnson, brother in law Wade Johnson and several nieces and nephews. Betty was a dedicated preacher’s wife throughout her marriage. Her chosen career was to be a devoted mother to her three boys who she was always there for with love, support and encouragement throughout their lives. A lifelong member of the Church of Christ she attended North Gadsden for over 50 years. Ronny and Betty were avid supporters of the Friday night Church of Christ Acapella singings, Betty continued to support them with her wonderful alto voice until her health no longer allowed. Pallbearers will be Jess Elrod, Nate Elrod, Will Elrod, Brian Johnson, David Mitchell, Skylar Mitchell, Kennon Wilson and Vaughn Wilson. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hope Lodge where she and Ronny stayed during his cancer treatments (1104 Ireland Way, Birmingham, AL 35205) or the Tidmore Bend Volunteer Fire Department (1708 Tidmore Bend Road, Gadsden, 35901) The family would like to extend special thanks to Kindred Hospice nurses Savannah Cole and Joy Souder, Dr. William Harrison and Dr. John Wilborn and staff. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 3 pm at the Gadsden Church of Christ Building.
