Dick Chinn

Born on June 29, 1937, in Oak Park, Illinois, to Jack and Frances Chinn, Dick spent his childhood in Wheaton, Illinois, graduating from Wheaton High School in 1955. He began his higher education journey at Beloit College in Wisconsin before transferring to Colorado State University, where he earned a degree in Light Construction and Management. It was at CSU that he met the love of his life, Ellie Rawson. They were married on August 16, 1959, in Lexington, Nebraska, and shared an extraordinary 65 years of marriage filled with love and laughter.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Dick placed family first and at the center of his life. Known for his unwavering kindness, humor, and boundless energy, he made everyone feel like part of his extended family—including his beloved dogs.

Dick was a man who found joy in hard work. Whether working in the cabinet shop, mowing the lawn or field on his John Deere tractor, or tackling the next challenge, he was happiest with his hands and mind busy. This passion led to the founding of Alpine Cabinet Company in 1968, a venture that began with a small loan and a big dream. With Ellie by his side and his trademark honesty, work ethic, and charisma, Alpine became a thriving business and a cornerstone of the community. Many of Dick’s employees, customers, and business associates became lifelong friends, a testament to his ability to connect with everyone.

Dick believed in giving back to his community and was passionate about supporting children, animals, healthcare initiatives, and his alma mater’s Construction Management program. A mentor and father figure to many, he took pride in helping others succeed, and numerous lives were touched by his wisdom and guidance. He also served on various boards, including the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association, Wells Fargo, and Home State Banks.

Dick loved life!! In his free time, Dick embraced life to the fullest. Whether traveling, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, golfing, or playing cards at The Elks Lodge, he surrounded himself with laughter and camaraderie. He cherished his cabin in Red Feather Lakes and could often be found enjoying it with family and friends. An avid CSU Rams supporter, he was the proud 28th member of the Ram Club and rarely missed a football or men’s basketball game.

Dick’s infectious smile, warm personality, and quick wit left a permanent mark on those he met. He never met a stranger and had a rare gift for making people feel valued, as though no time had passed since their last meeting.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Ellie; his sons, Scott (Susan) Chinn and Bill (Angie) Chinn, both of Fort Collins; and his daughter, Jeanette Polzin of Mississippi. His legacy lives on in his grandchildren, Mathew (Kelly) Chinn, Mitchell Chinn, Brittaney Chinn, Josh Polzin, and Courtney Polzin; and his great-grandchildren, Daylen, Jonothan, Jaxon, Jayson, Bella, and Lyneah. He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Frances, his sister Jackie, and his son-in-law Chuck Polzin.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 1:30 PM at the Ptarmigan Country Club, located at 5416 Vardon Way in Fort Collins, Colorado. Attendees are invited to dress in casual attire as we gather to honor and remember Dick.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Big Bones Canine Rescue.

Dick’s legacy of kindness, laughter, ability to light up a room and hard work will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He was a friend forever and will be deeply missed.
