Penny Kay Litton Schofield was born on June 27, 1948 to James (Tex) and Jean Litton in Des Moines, Iowa. The day she was born, her dad pulled out a penny from his pocket and he said she was going to be named Penny. This is how she got her name.
As a little girl, Penny thought she was a college student because every place she went she would ride on James' neck as he walked around campus. Jean made cheerleader outfits for the college cheer team and made Penny one and she loved to dance along. Penny's parents were members of a country club and who wanted Penny to be a debutante. Penny very much wanted to participate and she ate it up, she loved being a debutante.
After she graduated Justin F Kimball High School in 1966 she went to work for a big department store as a hostess at their in store restaurant and loved working there. She went on to spend a year at Anderson University and then found a passion for real estate with a career that spanned from the early 80s to 2006.
Penny married Guy Schofield in Interlaken, Switzerland on the third of July, 1992 where they also spent their honeymoon. The first day on their honeymoon, driving to the south of France there was a trucker strike. After many hours on secondary roads, Penny got out of the car and went and told the police men and truckers that she had just gotten married and wanted to get to the hotel. They immediately got on the radio, backed a truck up so they could get on the interstate and on to the hotel, effectively pausing the strike. Later on that trip, traveling on a sailboat, Guy got frustrated and switched to German and Penny started laughing. She said, “if we get through this week we won’t have any problems” and she was right.
Penny was the oldest sister and her siblings fondly remember growing up and admiring their cool big sister. Pebba would watch her take her time styling her hair and make-up, always leaving the house with a perfectly polished look, and Jim enjoyed spending his summer at her apartment’s pool, listening to Blood, Sweat, & Tears, Santana’s Greatest hits, and Chicago 5.
Penny was a community builder; everywhere she went she brought people together. From bringing together the ladies in the neighborhood to play cards, to getting groups to go out to dinner in Europe, to helping drive a Plano newcomer’s club. She was a true neighborhood influencer and loved getting involved with her community.
Penny had a very soft spot for her great-nieces and nephew. She enjoyed being involved in their lives and was instrumental in helping them in their time of need. She took great care picking out the right outfits and pj’s for Christmas presents and always enjoyed watching them grow. You could tell easily how much she loved and cared for them, and all of her family. She loved her nieces and nephews too, but all grown they definitely aren’t as cute as Isabel, Lily, and Peyton!
Penny loved playing cards and mahjong with her friends. She and Guy shared a love of traveling; she loved going on cruises, preferably somewhere warm. However, her favorite place to be was at home with Coco, Chanel, and Guy. She loved yellow roses, Gone with the Wind, Michael Buble, Hallmark- "every time it snows, they kiss"- movies, and British television.
Penny was a member of Custer Road United Methodist Church for the last few years, but was involved with other Methodists churches over the years. She enjoyed the sermons and so often would tell her family afterward of the messages she heard at church.
Penny is preceded in death by her father James (Tex) Litton and her short-haired blackish kitty cat Chanel.
She is survived by her husband Guy Schofield, Maine Coone kitty cat Coco, her mother Jean Litton, sister Pebba Yenny and her husband Tom, brother Jim Litton, niece and nephews Audra, Matthew, Luis and Steven, and great nieces and nephews Isabel, Lily, and Peyton.
