Jerry was born in Amarillo, TX on October 1, 1932 to John Jerry and Mattie Estelle Van Pelt. He attended Lubbock High School then Texas Tech University graduating with his BA in Geology. While a senior at Tech he married his high school sweetheart, Darlyne Wood. They enjoyed a long and loving marriage for 62 years.
His education at Tech and influence of the West Texas oil fields would establish his future occupation in the oilfield industry. Also, while at Tech Jerry became a founding member of the Texas Epsilon Chapter of Phi Delta Theta. After 50 years of membership, he was honored to be admitted into the Golden Legion in 2004. He was a lifelong member of the Texas Tech Alumni Association too, and served as President of the Southern California chapter of the Texas Tech Ex-Students in the 70’s.
After launching his career in the oil field with Gardner Denver his main territory was rural Texas. He quickly learned all aspects of drilling equipment which soon elevated his career. He was promoted to regional manager in Southern California division of Gardner Denver becoming the youngest to be promoted to that position. He then was responsible for international divisions of various drilling companies focusing on Indonesia yet covering a variety of global locations. He was accompanied by Darlyne to many of the international locations as well as related professional events, which showcased the marital bond they enjoyed throughout their lives. He was skilled in project management and became a well-respected leader in the construction of offshore drilling rigs. He was a member and leader in NOMADS (National Oil equipment Manufacturers and Delegates Society). He served as President in the 80’s. He concluded his career as a consultant for Nabors Industries LTD, leading the construction teams that built the Mars B / Olympus Project, the largest floating deep-water platform in the Gulf of Mexico.
He and Darlyne lived in Lubbock, Midland, Dallas, Los Angeles area, Kingwood and finally in Frisco, TX. He appreciated being active and serving in the Methodist Church throughout his life. He was an avid golf enthusiast. He was able to play most of the top courses and organized and participated in both professional and recreational tournaments. He enjoyed yardwork and gardening. On the weekends you would find him watching golf or football.
He and Darlyne loved their family. With two daughters, Brenda and Shirley and a son, Scott. He has 6 grandchildren. Matthew, Daniel and Nathan who reside in Texas. Allison, Trey and Mitchell who reside in California. He also has 3 great-grandchildren, Luke and Elijah and Kenna. His sister Dorothy preceded him in death.
After a brief illness he passed away on January 28, 2022. He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed.
