Her parents, George and Marilyn Burkhart were blessed with 3 children, Georgia being the eldest, sister Kim the second born child, and brother Jim was the baby. As a child Georgia was known as a tomboy. She spent as much time outside as possible and that is where her love of the outdoors began. Georgia was an avid swimmer at the community pool. Georgia completed elementary school and graduated high school in 1975, where her favorite course of study was English composition and writing. Georgia began college while still living in her home state of Indiana, but she left college before graduating to join the Army Reserve. She served basic training in San Antonio, Texas. The Reserve was where she began her studies in medicine and her commitment to whatever task was at hand was recognized when she received an award for marksmanship. Georgia’s Army Reserve career lasted 6 years.
In the early 1980’s Georgia completed her education at Fresno City College earning an Associate of Science degree, with her focus on Radiology and a certificate in General Ultrasound. Georgia spent her last 10 years caring for the needs of others, serving as an Ultrasound Technician at Madera Community Hospital.
Georgia married Mike Gentry in 1984. They were married in Fremont, California, in the backyard of a friend who happened to be a judge. Their daughter Sarah Michelle was born in 1985, and daughter Samantha Nicole came along in 1987. Sarah has blessed Georgia and Mike with 2 grandchildren, son Caleb is 8 years old, and daughter Rylie is 7.
Georgia longed to be outdoors hiking and camping in the mountains, it stands to reason she loved Yosemite National Park. Georgia loved animals, especially German Shepherds, which she bred at one time. In her late twenties “Jake” the Shepherd was a very cherished pet for her. Georgia loved wolves too, their untamed spirit spoke to her. Georgia loved riding horses with her friends. One of her friends from the Military and college was Mary Hughes. Georgia loved music, especially classic rock, some of her favorite artists were, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Tom Petty, and Journey. Lately Georgia enjoyed listening to comedy recordings by Ellen DeGeneres and Jim Gaffigan. Georgia’s favorite flowers were yellow roses.
Family and friends knew Georgia as a vibrant, and energetic free spirit. Georgia was able to identify new solutions to problems, and look for future possibilities, she was open minded. Her Facebook posting illustrates that, she wrote: “Interested in global wildlife, progressive science, and thinking outside of the sandbox”. Georgia could be blunt, but she was always aware of how someone else might feel. She was a spiritual person in her own way. Georgia loved her family, her friends, her work, and she loved the world. Georgia passed away on December 31, 2018 at her home. The world will be less interesting and less exciting without Georgia, and she will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
A Memorial Service for Georgia will be held Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 11:00 AM location:
